Background Information

The Trustees seek to recruit a new Digital Service Manager to support The Institution of Royal Engineers as it progresses through the next phase of its development.

The Institution of Royal Engineers is a Registered Charity, Incorporated by Royal Charter, established in 1887 to promote the science of military engineering and the efficiency of the Royal Engineers. Its early activities were limited to the publication of professional papers and this developed into establishing the Royal Engineers Museum (now a separate Registered Charity) and in recent times to becoming a Licensed Member of the Engineering Council, allowing the Institution to register its Members as Engineer Technicians, Incorporated Engineers and Chartered Engineers.

In 2018, the Council of the Institution of Royal Engineers agreed Strategy 2030 with a vision of being a “vibrant Institution providing innovative solutions in complex environments” and a mission of remaining a “learned society that seeks to advance the art and science of military engineering by sharing experiences, best practice and emerging thinking”. Key to success is effective communication to ensure Members understand the value that the Institution offers. Moving forward activity has been bounded (broadly) within 4 key areas: Professional Registration, Professional Effectiveness, the Knowledge Centre and Professional Networks.

Reporting to the Chief Executive the new Digital Service Manager will be required to lead on the provision of digital services and the maintenance of the Institution new website in support of its c10,000 Members.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead on all Institution digital services, working with the Chief Executive and the Corps Communications Hub to establish and develop appropriate platforms to support Strategy 2030 and its Value Proposition in order to deliver the Institution’s charitable OBJECT.
• Daily operational management of the Institution’s new website, including the organisation of Bulletin Boards, enablement of webinars, maintenance of data, posting of articles and general development of the platform to ensure it remains relevant and fit for purpose.
• Develop all the Institution’s Social media links (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc), posting as appropriate to support a dynamic and informative continuous information campaign for the membership to ensure it remains CONNECTED.
• Work with the RE Museum to establish a first-class Knowledge Centre as a ‘hub’ that can provide ready access to an extensive archive of historical and contemporary military engineering knowledge and information.
• Continuously enhance the Institution new website as an interactive, informative and innovative portal designed as an enabler for the Knowledge Centre.
• Improving the Institution’s internal and external communications, reinforcing the Institution’s connections with its Members and the serving Corps of Royal Engineers.
• Liaise with both Link Digital and Dataware (Subscriber Contents Management System) acting as the Institution’s Administrator for such digital services being provided.

Qualities and Experience:

The Trustees are looking to appoint a Digital Service Manager who can demonstrate success in the following areas:
• A proven Administrator with drive and the ability to multitask and deliver a broad range of outputs often to tight deadlines.
• A personable individual able to matrix manage and interact with an eclectic range of personnel from across several other competing Charities and organisation.
• Technical acumen with evidence of sound management skills and an ability to reconcile platform limitations with output needs.
• A problem solver, capable of presenting innovative solutions to wicked issues.
• Excellent communicator, with an ability to work collegiately and influence others.
• Energy, enthusiasm and a passion for the successful delivery of a complex mission with limited available resource and by a very discreet number of Institution staff.
Experience in or knowledge of the following areas is highly desirable:
• Military engineering and the role of the Royal Engineers today and through history.
• The Charity Sector.
• The Engineering Council and other Professional Engineering Institutions.

Further particulars:

This post is offered on a 3-year, fixed term contract, extendable for a further fixed term or as permanent employment by agreement of both parties, and is subject to the provision of original documentation that indicates the successful applicant’s right to work in the UK. A 6-month probationary period will apply.

Pay and benefits

A competitive salary is offered in line with skill, experience and market pay for similar roles. Payment is made by credit transfer to a bank or building society, monthly in arrears. The Institution terms and conditions of employment are based as closely as possible on the Civil Service model, including flexible working patterns. The Staff Handbook is available on application. A Private Pension Plan is offered.

There is a generous annual leave scheme, based on the Civil Service scheme, plus public holidays.
