This five day Battlefield Study will follow the role of the Royal Engineers and cover the battle of the Rhineland, crossing of the Rhine and the advance to Hamburg in 1945.
After meeting at Weeze airport (formerly RAF Laarbruch). [1]  It will cover the 1944-45 period, beginning with a visit to the highly-regarded Oorlogsmuseum at Overloon to set the scene by covering the battle of Overloon/Venrai.  It will then visit the sites relating to Operations VERITABLE, PLUNDER and VARSITY and conclude with a visit to 75 Engr Regt at Minden to see the current Corps wide wet-gap crossing capability.  The tour will return to the UK via Bremen airport
[1] It is suggested that participants fly from Stansted airport. Ryan Air offers flights to Weeze.
  • Guided tour around the Overloon Oorlogs museum and visit to the Venrai battlefield.
  • The Reichswald Forest and Cleve.
  • The XXX Corps crossing of the Rhine near Rees & 6th Airborne Div sites.
  • VIII Corps Crossings over the Ems near Osnabruk and the Weser near Petershagen.
  • Advance to the Elbe, including the crossing of the Weser and a visit to 75 Engr Regt at Minden.
Outline Itinerary
  • Monday 23 Sept.  Fly to Weeze at own expense.  Visit Oorlogsmuseum. Overnight in Kleve.
  • Tuesday 24 Sept.  Visit the Groesbeek CWGC cemetery, Reichswald forest, northern edge of Seigfried line near Frasselt, Kleve and the Goch escarpment. Overnight in Kleve.
  • Wednesday 25 Sept.  Visit the XXX Corps Rhine crossing points IVO Rees, Esserden & Honnopel.  Visit 6 Airborne sites IVO Rees & Hamminkeln. Overnight in Wesel.
  • Thursday 26 Sept.  Visit sites relating to VIII Corps advance to the Weser IVO Osnabrűck, Minden and Petershagen.  Overnight in Weserschlößchen (Nienburg).
  • Friday 27 Sept.  Visit sites relating to XXX Corps crossing of the Weser and visit 75 Engr Regt at Minden.  Fly to Stansted from Bremen at own expense. 
  • 3 and 4 star hotels, full board, all in-country transport and all entrance fees and guides
  • Approximate cost £320 pp (excluding flights).
  • Single supplement £230.
  • Places will be on a first come, first served basis
  • A bursary is being investigated for Serving Members of the Corps for rank Spr/Pte to Lt.  This will mean that potentially up to £200 of the overall cost will be met by the Corps.  Further details to follow.
The study will begin at Weeze airport.  We have been advised that participants will be required to fly at their own expense, rather than have it included as part of the REHS tour.  It may be necessary stay overnight in a hotel close to Stansted airport prior to departure. Details of suggested flights will be provided in an administrative detail email, to be issued in approximately one month.
