Volunteer Peer Group Training and Support Materials mycareerpath logo

MyCareerPath is a free CPD tool from the Engineering Council. Available throughout your engineering career and as a Professional peer Group Member to support and maintain your Engineering Competence. Please use MyCareerPath to plan, record and reflect on your own CPD.

Now wondering what to study and record for your first input?  There is enough self-study CPD material below, all applicable to Professional Peer Group members.

There is a general push post-Grenfell, to lead with Ethical guidance. The Engineering Council videos are also helpful and if you can record your study of these materials, and reflect on your study, you assist with our compliance and licencing requirements. Our intention is to add to and refresh these materials regularly, Please share any requests or ideas and, do not forget the regular REHS webinars and conferences.

AI WG – and Engineering Registrations

Engineering UK along with other interested professional bodies have put together an Artificial Intelligence Working Group (AIWG) to discuss on and define the facets of AI  that could contribute to and affect current robust accreditation processes.

The resulting report from this Working Group are now available HERE

As a simply summary:

  • Higher Education Engineering programmes are already using AI in its approach to education
  • The use of AI to assess submissions and thereby drive efficiencies is possible but there are currently no agreed approaches to this
  • The use of AI to develop a submission is inevitable but its use should not distort or exaggerate an applicant’s history
  • While not being a current requirement, the broad principle of requiring that an application be ‘the applicant’s own work’ should remain
sufficient and a specific AI statement is not needed

The aim is to better identify, and plan for, the impact that AI could have on the Engineering Institutions and the value of its offering.  In short using AI gives the ability to input questions and extract content that could work towards an experience statement for the application.

See below example of a genuine use of ChatGPT.  None of the content below was edited, this is exactly what came out of ChatGPT, following the question, with absolutely no guidance or learning curve.

I am in the military how do I prove I am aware of ethical matters

ChatGPT
As a member of the military, there are several ways you can demonstrate your awareness of ethical matters:

  • Familiarize yourself with military ethics: Take the time to study and understand the ethical principles and guidelines that govern military conduct. This may include familiarizing yourself with the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), rules of engagement, and the core values of your specific branch of service.
  • Follow military regulations and guidelines: Adhere to the military’s regulations and guidelines, especially those related to ethical conduct. This includes behaving in a manner that reflects integrity, honesty, and respect for others. By consistently demonstrating ethical behavior in your actions, you establish your commitment to ethical matters.
  • Complete ethics training: Participate in any ethics training programs or courses offered by your military branch. These programs are designed to enhance your understanding of ethical principles and provide guidance on how to handle ethical dilemmas that may arise in military operations.
  • Engage in discussions and forums: Actively engage in discussions with your colleagues, superiors, and subordinates about ethical matters. This could involve participating in formal ethics seminars, workshops, or informal conversations within your unit. Sharing your perspectives and demonstrating critical thinking on ethical issues can showcase your awareness and commitment to ethical considerations.
  • Seek leadership roles: Strive to take on leadership positions within your unit or organization. Leadership positions provide opportunities to influence and guide others in ethical decision-making. By actively promoting and upholding ethical standards, you can demonstrate your understanding of ethical matters and set an example for your peers.
  • Continuously educate yourself: Stay informed about current ethical debates and developments, both within and outside the military. Read books, articles, and research papers related to ethics, and stay updated on any changes or updates to military ethical guidelines or policies.
  • Seek professional development opportunities: Look for opportunities to further develop your knowledge and skills in the area of military ethics. This could involve attending specialized courses, conferences, or workshops that focus on ethical decision-making and moral reasoning.
  • Remember, consistently demonstrating ethical behaviour and actively engaging in discussions on ethical matters can help prove your awareness of ethical considerations within the military.

By asking the right questions EngTech applicants could extract and use content such as the above in their application.

Looking at AI with a positive eye, the above could very easily guide the applicants to situations where they could then identify where they have acted ethically for a genuine, and personal statement.
