1954 – 1957 Awarded the VC at the 1st Battle of Ypres in December 1914, where he was throwing improvised bombs into the enemy trenches, in order for him to rescue wounded men. Awarded the DSO while with 8th Division in 1915. Italian POW in 1943, during which time he wrote his autobiography, but managed to escape when the Italians surrendered in 1943. Colonel Commandant, 1945. While Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey in 1951, he invited 131 Parachute Engineer Regiment, TA, of which he was Honorary Colonel, to parachute onto the Island’s airfield, as part of the liberation celebrations. This continued for many years, although it later became a water jump into the sea off St Peter Port, because of airport congestion. |
