Apprentice Technician

Often a start point, Apprentice Technician is open to those serving in the rank of Sapper within the Corps of Royal Engineers (Regular or Reserve).

Members (MInstRE)

Open to those serving, or have served, in the Corps from junior non-commissioned officer upwards. Other personnel from overseas with service within the engineering arm of their countries can apply, as can civilians with relevant backgrounds who can demonstrate they support the charities objectives.

Fellow (FInstRE)

This is the highest class of elected membership available to any member who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to the Institution and Corps, and to the advancement of the art and science of Military Engineering.

Honorary Members (Hon MInstRE)

These are elected by the Council.

Membership Benefits

As a member you will proudly have MInstRE after your name and be fully supported by the Members Services Committee.  You will be joining a diverse community of over 10,000 military engineering professionals, with strong links to industry and academia.  Most importantly, you will be part of a community whose aim is to raise the level of understanding of military engineering and professionalism within the Corps of Royal Engineers through:

Promotion of military engineering

Initiating the design of events such as: lectures, joint professional meetings, battlefield studies, multimedia material & debates throughout the United Kingdom and abroad. Also includes informing the membership of civilian Professional Registration opportunities and how to obtain qualifications.

Encouragement of individuals

The encouragement of individuals and other member groups to engage, contribute and collaborate with the InstRE to achieve its aim. There is a specific focus on journal articles and incentivising students to do well on selected courses.

Amplification of events

Assisting the Institution to amplify events by partnering in conferences, symposia and workshops run by the Corps. This is likely to include making events available to a wider audience; and ensuring that the output of the event is captured and available for future use.

Being part of an inclusive organisation

Being part of an inclusive organisation whose activities and decisions consider the requirements of all members, including minority groups.

Cost of initial application for MInstRE, apprentice and current yearly membership cost.

Regular Army

Regular Officers contribute 71.5% of a day’s pay through Payroll Giving (Day’s Pay Scheme).
Regular Soldiers contribute 10% of a day’s pay through Payroll Giving.
2026 rate – Effective as of 01/01/2026.  this includes the choice of hard copies of three journals and six supplements per year.

Retired, Reserves and Civilian

  • Retired Officers and Soldiers: £54.93
  • Reserve Officers, WO1 and WO2: £82.33
  • Reserve Sgt-SSgt: £68.57
  • Reserve Spr-Cpl: £54.93
  • Civilian: £66.30

Reservists online Publications only (The below rates do not apply to anyone with a Professional Registration)

  • Reserve WO1-WO2: £13.79
  • Reserve Sgt-SSgt: £10.99
  • Reserve Spr Cpl: £6.86

Fellowship costs

  • All Fellows: Additional £50 per year

Not a serving or Ex Royal Engineer?

Not a problem

Membership is available to those who have not been Royal Engineers but who have a background that supports the OBJECT of the Institution to advance the art and science of military engineering. Applications will be considered by the Chief Executive under authority delegated by Council.  Candidates will require a ‘proposer’ and a ‘seconder’ who must be a current member of the Institution.  They are required to make a short statement regarding the applicants suitability.  Applicants will be required to explain how they intend to meet a set of essential and desirable criteria of membership.

The applicant must demonstrate the essential criteria in a military context:

Essential criteria

  • Currently working (or has worked) in a relevant position contributing towards advancing the art and science of military engineering.
  • Is willing to promote education in the said art and science of military engineering, and the acquisition of historical scientific and professional knowledge.
  • Has potential to foster partnerships as part of expanding the Institution’s professional network, whether these links be with other militaries, academia or industry.
  • Is prepared to contribute towards the Institution’s knowledge transfer activities.
  • Is capable of promoting military engineering as widely as possible, including active engagement with other organisations and bodies of the engineering profession.
  • Is ready to organise, or contribute towards, events for the benefit of the wider membership.

Desirable criteria

  • Able to offer specialist knowledge in a specific area of military engineering.
  • Is willing to support, or contribute towards, development of military engineering policy.
  • Interested in working towards attaining a qualification at any level of professional registration, or willing to apply for an additional title with the Institution if already a registrant.

Completing your membership

Once you have completed your membership choice you will proceed to an online sign up form where you will need to add the required content to the form, i.e. name, address, service number, rank, qualifications etc.

Royal Engineers Historical Society

Royal Engineers Historical Society (REHS) Membership is available to anyone that isn’t already connected via an InstRE membership.  As a REHS member you will get full access to all REHS events (conferences, webinars etc) and receive a routine newsletter.
The REHS also organises an annual Battlefield Study for members, works with the RE Museum and is fully involved in other events with other organisations such as the Royal United Services Institute.
REHS membership is available to InstRE Members (£15) and non-members (£25).
