Leadership in a Digital Age

8 Engineer Brigade Leadership Conference – Feb 2024

Leadership in a Digital Age

Pausing to Reflect on New Leadership Challenges

The 8 Engineer Brigade recently convened in Chatham for a critical examination of leadership in the rapidly evolving digital landscape. Hosted by Brigadier Carvel, the event brought together the brigade’s leading minds to reflect on the fusion of traditional leadership principles with the demands of the digital era, particularly within the framework of military engineering within 8 Engineer Brigade.

Why is this Important?

Opening remarks by Brigadier Carvel highlighted the brigade’s commitment to fostering leadership excellence at every level, aligning with the mission to enhance the UK’s Defence capabilities through specialist engineering in a digital age. The discussions were set against the backdrop of current global military engagements, underscoring the importance of adapting to the digital revolution and the requirement for effective leadership.

Inspiring Rather than Inundating

Designed to inspire rather than inundate, the conference encouraged active engagement, aiming to seed thoughtful leadership practices. It served as a platform for sharing diverse perspectives, with a focus on leveraging digital advancements to maintain operational edge while ensuring the moral component remains central to leadership within the Brigade.

The Human Element in Digital Advancements

Reiterating themes from senior military leadership, the conference stressed the critical balance of integrating digital tools without losing sight of the fundamental human aspects of leadership. This balance is crucial for success in both current and future operational contexts.

Leadership, Followership and Healthy Working

Topics ranged from the tactical aspects of leading digital teams to the broader considerations of cultivating a healthy team environment in the face of digital pressures. The necessity for leaders to remain digitally literate, while fostering an environment where specialists and followers alike can thrive, was a recurring theme.

Practical Actions for Right Now

The event distilled key learnings into practical advice, advocating for adaptable, informed, and inclusive leadership approaches. It highlighted the concept of ‘incomplete leaders’ contributing to ‘complete teams,’ underscoring the value of diversity and shared expertise in achieving common goals. In particular the conference advocated for leaders to be digitally curious and to engage with opportunities for digital upskilling from DigiX Lifelines (simple tips and tricks), JHub Coding Scheme (technical acumen) or the Digital Academy (both).

Moving Forward in a Digital Age

The 8 Engineer Brigade Leadership Conference was a reflective exercise in understanding the nuances of leadership amidst digital change. It served as a reminder of the constant need for adaptability, digital awareness, and, fundamentally, a people-centric approach to leadership within the military engineering community.

As the brigade moves forward, the insights gained from the conference are set to inform leadership practices, balancing the embrace of digital opportunities with the enduring principles of effective leadership.

Modern military practices

To enable modern military practices to develop we must connect our thoughts, decisions and situations with modern engineering thinking and techniques.

TECHNICAL ROSTER SYMPOSIUM 2023 – PXR

The Tech Roster Symposium has successfully brought together over 80 Clk Wks, MPF, GE & PET/PQE Offrs to develop understanding on the preeminent MILENG challenge of our time. Using the IOpC framework, underpinned by a keynote speech from the ARRC Chief Engr & CIMIC to sequentially build knowledge and introduce topics to attendees ensured those hearing it for the first time were not overmatched by terminology or content. The symposium provided a detailed insight into NATO infrastructure engineering, the R Signals CPO and RE Geospatial areas, their successes and challenges, and set the conditions for future engagement and utilisation. Encouraging discussions under Chatham House rules enabled attendees to speak freely and with confidence they would be heard.

Comd 12 (FS) Engr Gp, as the OF5 lead for the Army Infrastructure Engineering Level 2 specialisation will sponsor the production of a Capability Handbook describing the contribution provided for Defence. This will provide the benchmark for personnel (Clk Wks, MPF, GE & PQE), org, trg and related force development. This work will be coordinated by SO2 G7 Infra for delivery NLT Q2 2024.

Aim. The Technical Roster Symposium is an annual event held at 1 RSME for members of the technical roster.

Defence is adopting an open approach. We are looking for ideas and opportunities in unconventional places and in unanticipated relationships. We therefore want to engage with companies and organisations who are similarly willing to explore new ways of working.

To support this, we are:

  • Making it easier for businesses to work with us.
  • Working with industry in different ways.
  • Consulting with industry to identify lessons from the current innovation portfolio.
  • Exploring provision of access to finance and mentoring services.
  • Piloting information sharing to give industry easier access to current and potential future innovation investment.

This co-collaboration community, is one of the ways we’re exploring to achieve our vision.  We’d like you to join the conversations, sharing your; experiences, solutions or willingness to collaborate on a joint project to solve a community issue or challenge.
