The Institution has the responsibility to publish memoirs of its members. To assist those compiling memoirs in the future, to ensure the accuracy of the information and more importantly to save unnecessary questions to surviving family members, members over the rank of Colonel, are asked to complete the proforma below and return it to the Institution.

Memoir form (Aug 2025)

For those who have already submitted a proforma and just wish to add details about their lives after retiring from the Army, please use the Supplementary proforma.

Supplementary information (Oct 2024)

All proformas received are secured until after the death of the author and cannot be released to the memoir author without the specific authority of the Secretary, The Institution of Royal Engineers. The exception to this is the information provided if you agree to contribute to the memoir of others. Should you not wish a memoir published in the Journal please return this proforma marked ON MY DEATH I DO NOT WISH A MEMOIR PUBLISHED.

Over the years, Engineering Council has sold ties as a mark of registered status. Although historically these were produced in a variety of designs, they tended to cater for Chartered Engineers (CEng). The most popular design has now been reproduced in non-crushable silk, and new similar ties have been created for technicians (EngTech and ICTTech) and Incorporated Engineers (IEng).

For the growing number of female registrants, new lapel pins are available in all four categories. These are, of course, also appropriate for male registrants.

All items are now available for purchase (ties at £14.95 each and lapel pins at £1.00 each, plus postage and packing) through the products page on EngC’s website or from the Sapper Shop.

As part of the Institution’s continuing drive to publicise and promote professional technician and engineer status we are looking for current Engineering Technicians, Chartered Engineers and Incorporated Engineers, both serving and non-serving to provide some information about themselves and their attitude and benefits of registration.

We are looking to produce a regular article to appear in The Sapper magazine which would also include the publication of the results of each engineering selection board.

The profile, which should include a good quality photo, should give a brief summary of your career, when you achieved registration, what motivated you to take part in the process, how easy it was to make an application and what your perception is of being professionally registered. The profile does not need to be particularly “wordy” and we will assist where appropriate.

The Army is committed to developing more professionally qualified engineers and technicians, and will pay annual professional registration fees for the foreseeable future.   You may be eligible to claim back your annual fees if you are still serving.  This is only for serving personnel and full details can be found via DefNet.

SO REMEMBER TO CLAIM BACK YOUR FEES IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE
How to claim is explained in Defence Internal Notices 2025DIN01-039-Military Refund of Engineering Professional Body Fees.docx. If claiming just let the Institution know so that we can send you an invoice. Alternatively, you may decide to have your professional fees considered as part of your TAX CODE for the current financial year when you do your self-assessment and HMRC can assist you.

Don’t forget, if you have recently achieved a new engineering registration, to also investigate claiming your EPRA as there is a new enduring award scheme.
