Engineering Technician (EngTech) Application

An EngTech applies proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical military and/or construction engineering problems.  Possible examples include equipment and non-equipment bridging, shaping the battlefield, demolitions, force protection engineering, Search and EOD, Geo engineering, C3I and MT equipment solutions as well as skills learned on trade and ME courses.

You are required to identify working within safe systems and are able to demonstrate:

  • Use military engineering knowledge and understanding to apply technical and practical skills.
  • Evidence of your contribution to either the design, development, manufacturing, installation commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, processes or services.
  • Supervisory or technical responsibility.  What was your role and tasks?
  • Effective interpersonal skills in communicating technical matters.  How did you persuade people to adopt your proposal?
  • Commitment to professional engineering values and code of conduct.

A successful EngTech application is achieved by explaining your varied military/ construction/ engineering experience and future development plans.  Your development plans and future CPD opportunities identify a path to development, leading to a stronger application and movement to a higher engineering level.  The MY Career Path and CPD guidance content support this process.

Application Process and Tasks

If you are a junior officer or an NCO, we have already mapped your RETCC or your Class 1 trade, command, leadership and management training across to the competences set out by the Engineering Council for EngTech.  This means you are eligible to apply, but still have to develop a comprehensive application to achieve your goal.  The application process below enables you to explain where and how you have used the skills you have received and developed, throughout your career.  You will need to confirm your qualifications and experience, and develop a plan to continue your CPD and growth.

To go through the process you must first be a member of the Institution of Royal Engineers.  If you are already a member of the InstRE, have updated your login details and have logged into the new website (here), then use the link below.

Take note of the following prior to application

A successful EngTech application relies on the complete and correct submission of evidence.  You will, or may, already have the skills and engineering background to be awarded an EngTech registration.  This however still needs you to prove this level and use of engineering competence.

Remember, if you are successful you may be able to apply for the MOD Engineering Registration Recognition Award (EPRA).

An EngTech registration also translates into the equivalent civilian engineering careers and highlights your ability to employers, customers and colleagues.  You would also be able to use the Post Nominals (EngTech MInstRE).
