About Us
A learned society that seeks to advance the art and science of military engineering by sharing experiences, best practice and emerging thinking.
Who we are
The Institution of Royal Engineers (InstRE) is a registered charity incorporated by Royal Charter, established in 1887 to promote the art and science of military engineering, and the efficiency of the Corps of Royal Engineers. We provide a forum for debate through sponsorship of joint professional meetings; the publication of articles in a triannual journal; the maintenance of a museum and library for the Corps’ heritage and archive collection; and the administration of prizes and awards for military engineering excellence. We are proud to be a professional engineering institution and licensed member of the Engineering Council, allowing us to register our members as Engineering Technicians (EngTech), Incorporated Engineers (IEng) and Chartered Engineers (CEng).
Our purpose
We are all about the promotion and advancement of the art and science of military engineering to stimulate military efficiency, particularly that of the Corps of Royal Engineers. This is done through sponsoring debates, publication of information, historical study, the acquisition of historical, scientific and professional knowledge and by maintaining strong links with other branches of the engineering profession.
Who runs InstRE
InstRE is governed by a trustees board responsible for the Institution’s strategic decision making. Our Chief Executive leads the Institution in developing and delivering the Institution’s Strategy 2030, together with a small secretariat and a number of volunteers.
The Trustees are supported by a council, who are directly elected by InstRE members at our annual general meeting.
Although our Royal Charter and by-laws are the authoritative governance documents, these are supplemented by our rules and regulations (revised 19 Oct 17).

What our members say
“I joined the Institution of Royal Engineers (InstRE) in 2007, shortly before leaving regular service. To me, as a serving SNCO, it seemed to be the natural thing to do as soon as I heard about it.
I had not previously been a member of any other professional body.
Shortly after joining I applied for and gained professional registration in the grade of Engineering Technician.
I consider both membership and professional registration as worthwhile and valuable commodities, certainly while I am involved in the administration of Engineering qualifications.
I feel strongly that InstRE is the natural “professional home” for Royal Engineers who are currently serving and their counterparts who are now in civilian careers. It provides a great opportunity to network with other member of the Sapper Family, to assist in the furtherance of professional development and to be a source of information to all who have an interest in military engineering in general.
I fully intend to retain my membership for the foreseeable future and urge all “Sappers” to do similar”.
“I achieved Incorporated Engineer and Chartered Engineer through InstRE. This is really a dream come true for me. I urge all eligible personnel in the Corps of the Royal Engineers to apply”.
“I didn’t expect to be where I am today, but I’m proud to say that I took the opportunities I was given. This helped me to move up to a role with a relatively high level of responsibility”.
