The Institution of Royal Engineers (InstRE) and Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) annual Joint Professional Meeting (JPM) took place on Tuesday 4 June 2024 at One Great George Street, London SW1P 3AA. The JPM considered the use of military and civilian capabilities to protect critical national infrastructure. Recent global events have amply demonstrated the need to protect vital state assets, whether this be from overt conventional threats or covert attack like cyber warfare. Military engineers are currently at the forefront of delivering advice in the Ukraine; this major eastern Europe conflict has provided a timely reminder of the need to examine national resilience demands. History provides plenty of examples of successful civilian military collaboration in times of need, with the ability to respond dynamically often delivering a competitive edge. The meeting provided an opportunity to consider ways to enhance national resilience, with presentations examining conventional security demands as well as considering why ‘Digital Engineering’ is also essential for the protection of critical national infrastructure. The JPM culminated in a Panel Question and Answer session.
