AIJ is a recruitment initiative aimed at supporting Armed Forces leavers, Veterans and their families into Prison and Probation roles. The initiative highlights the organisations commitment to the Armed Forces community, recognising the wide range of transferable skills they bring to our workplace, and forms part of the package of measures to tackle ongoing staffing shortages across HM Prison and Probation Service. AIJ is an initiative which sits outside of fair and open recruitment and utilises exception 2 to the Civil Service Commission’s recruitment principles, offering a 2-year fixed-term appointment with the opportunity for applicants to convert to permanency after 12 months in post.
Only the following groups are eligible for AIJ:
- Service Leavers (SL) – those in transition from the UK Armed Forces (UKAF) and in their resettlement window – last 12 months of service.
- Armed Forces Veterans – those who have already left UKAF, within five years at the point of application, having served for at least one year as a regular or reserve
- Spouses or Civil/Legal Partners of serving UKAF or Veterans
